Tree Planting to positively impact wildlife and natural environmentsThe Rotary Club of St Augustine was happy to support the South Eastern Hunters Association with their 40th Annual Tree Planting Day in memory of its late president Mr. Mohan Bholasingh, who is the uncle of one of our members, Sunil Roopchand. The Club donated Balata, Chenette and Pomerac Trees and members, partners-in-service and their kids joined the initiative to distribute plants in Rio Claro and Tableland. Additionally, trees were planted at the South Eastern Hunters Association's Camp located at Rio Claro. The South Eastern Hunters Association's 40th Annual Initiative to 'plant a tree for life' to sustain the environment, positively impacts our wildlife and natural environments. |

Support for the Ukraine from Trinidad and TobagoFrom Rotary Club of Ripley and Send (UK): Our club was contacted by a founding member of the Rotary Club of St Augustine Trinidad, West Indies, Dr John Bharath about donating a mobile Dental Unit of his to the Ukraine front line villages for treating those in need. We were able to use our UK and Ukraine ICC members to deliver the unit as part of larger project to equip several mobile medical facilities. Inner Wheel DayThe Inner Wheel Club of St Augustine recently celebrated Inner Wheel Day with Feature Speaker, Caroline Alcock, british Deputy High Commission to Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday 19th January. According to International Inner Wheel: President Helena Foster (1969-1970) came up with the idea for a special day for a special organisation, so she wrote a letter to all clubs worldwide. "I would like to ask all members of clubs throughout the world to link together in ACTION ON JANUARY 10th. I have chosen this special day because it was on January 10th 1924 that the Mother Club, the Manchester Inner Wheel club, England, first adopted the name INNER WHEEL.

Celebrating with the Rotary Club of TobagoMembers of the Rotary Club of St Augustine journeyed to sister isle to celebrate the Rotary Club of Tobago's 50th Anniversary. In January 1969, members of the Rotary Club of St Augustine also attended the Charter Ceremony of the Club. According to John Brodbeck, Charter Member of the Rotary Club of St Augustine: "The event was held at the newly opened Mt Irvine's Resort. Frank Misir, QC from the Rotary Club of San Fernando who was the Rotary Administrative Advisor for the Group of Rotary Clubs presented the Charter to the Rotary Club of Tobago. If I can recall the Charter President of the Club was the head of Customs in Tobago." Past District Governor John migrated back to the US in the 1970s and has been a Rotarian for over 50 years, starting with the Rotary Club of St Augustine and currently a member of the Rotary Club of Springvale. Disaster ReliefOn Friday 19th October 2018, there was major flooding throughout Trinidad. One of the hardest hit area was in the Tunapuna/Piarco Region and the Rotary Club of St Augustine mobilised Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, members of the business community and friends of Rotary working with the Tunapuna Piarco Regional Corporation to provide thousands of meals hours after the flooding and also food, cleaning and medical hampers. We also provided mattresses, clothes, stoves and refrigerators to affected families and assisted other Rotary Clubs by donating supplies for their affected areas. The Club plans to continue to work with the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation, other Rotary Clubs and the business community to assist with disaster response for the region.

HBI Regional Distribution Centre (RDC)In 2008, RDC was established in Trinidad & Tobago and the main purpose is to: (1) receive and stock in TT, cardiac pace-making devices (Pacemakers Defibrillators, and related accessories) from Manufacturers worldwide; (2) To transship the devices to HBI Heart Centres in several parts of the world. To date the RDC has distributed some 3,000 devices at an estimated all-in cost of $270 million, but what is most important is that our Club in Trinidad and Tobago has contributed in the saving of these 3,000 lives in just nine years, an average of 333 poor people lives saved annually. |

Rotary Club of St Augustine celebrates 50th AnniversaryThe Rotary Club of St Augustine recently celebrated its’ 50th Anniversary as a Chartered Rotary Club. At the 50th Annual Handing Over Ceremony, held at The UWI Inn and Conference Centre, newly installed President, Maria Mohammed-Maharaj - the second female in the Club’s history to hold this position - noted that this significant milestone will be highlighted during the new Rotary year, with the continuation of the 50th Anniversary Eye Project, that started under Immediate Past President, Balraj Kelly. This project, a partnership between the Rotary Club of St Augustine, Caribbean Eye Institute and Medical Associates Hospital, provides much needed eye surgeries to patients who could not afford these procedures. The Club will also execute projects during the year, under Rotary International’s Areas of Focus for Literacy as well Economic and Community Development. Hamper DistributionOne of our members Rtn Kristal kindly donated twenty food hampers for distribution to the needy in our community. In one weekend we had Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors all delivering hampers.

December EventsOur Christmas function will be held on Saturday 17th December at President Gary's home starting from 4.30pm. Dinner will be served from 6.30 with Entertainment by a live Parang Band, Los Hombres starting at 5.30pm.

House for Mr KhanMr Hamid Khan started to build a concrete house for himself and his wife at Bamboo Village Valsayn. He had some medical complications which quickly consumed his savings and prevented him from completing the structure.
The Rotary Club of St Augustine was called in to assist.

Diabetes Education Research Prevention Institute (DERPI)The Rotary Club of St Augustine is a major sponsor of the work of the Diabetes Education Research and Prevention Institute (DERPI). DERPI launched their DO campaign today which encourages pregnant women to get tested for diabetes. Diabetes can cause severe complications during pregnancy and most times can only be detected by medical testing.

Rotary Club St Augustine mentors Rotaract Club St Augustine membersThe Rotaract Club of St Augustine celebrated their 13th Anniversary on 23rd March 2016. Members of the Rotary Club of St Augustine joined with them for the Anniversary dinner.
President Gary also used the opportunity to launch the mentorship programme where Rotarian mentors would be paired with Rotaractors. The mentors will be "a brain to pick, an ear to listen and somebody to push in the right direction".

YOUNG SING, LEE POY WIN ROTARY CLUB GOLF FOR LIFE TOURNAMENTAnthony Young Sing and Curtis Lee Poy emerged winners of the 5th Annual Rotary Club of St Augustine Golf for Life Tournament held on Saturday 10th October at Millennium Lakes Golf & Country Club in Trincity. Young Sing and Lee Poy, representing Massy Technologies, won with a tally of 46 Stableford points followed by the team of Rabindra Narine and Ahamad Ali (Second Crossing Hardware) two points back on 44. In 3rd position was the team of 10-year-old Chris Richards Jr. and Wayne Baptiste (Royal Castle) who also had 44 points but lost out on a count back. Rounding out the top five were Subash Ragbir and George Bleasdell (JS Steel Construction) with 43 points and Richard Lara and Randy Dhalloo (Jadoo’s Trading) with 42. There were 10 pairs of prizes given out with the champions receiving attractive trophies, TT$5,000.00 in units from Unit Trust Corporation as well as hampers from Angostura. No one was able to win the hole in one prize of a BMW 1 Series sponsored by 21st Century Insurance and Reinsurance Brokers Ltd or the US$250,000.00 prize for a hole in one from 180 yards on the 9th hole but Mohammed Haniff won bragging rights and a hamper for being the closest to the pin in the shootout. The tournament was held to raise funds to support the work of Heartbeat International of Trinidad & Tobago in their efforts to supply pacemakers and defibrillators to needy patients throughout Trinidad and Tobago and a total of 42 teams participated this year. At the prize-giving ceremony, Past President of the Rotary Club of St Augustine, Krishna Boodhai, chairman of the organizing committee, thanked the committee for their efforts in making the event another huge success. He also indicated that some of the proceeds of the event would go toward developing the game of golf in the country through the continued sponsorship of two young promising golfers in the persons of Sarah Ramphal and Dinesh Jackree who received assistance last year and will continue to receive professional training for another year.
Gary Williams, President of the Rotary Club of St Augustine, presented the challenge trophy to the champions and congratulated all the other winners. He also expressed his gratitude to all the sponsors, participants and guests who were also asked to reserve October 1st for next year’s event. Official Golf for Life Launch and HBITT PresentationThe Rotary Club of St Augustine recently held the official launch for the 5th Annual Golf for Life Tournament at the Caribbean Eye Institute in Valsayn.
The event also included presentations by the main beneficiary for the event, Heartbeat International of Trinidad & Tobago (HBITT) and two (2) recipients of pacemakers, Christine Bocus and Mei-Gui Cen.
Mei-Gui Cen had open-heart surgery at Stony Brook Hospital in the US when she was only 4 years old and received her 1st pacemaker in 1994. She is currently 24 years old and lives in Tunapuna. Since then, she is now on her third pacemaker, which was implanted by HBITT on 18th October 2010 by Dr Sateesh Ramphall. Mei-Gui received her undergraduate degree in Physics from The University of the West Indies (The UWI) and has recently started her Masters in Project Management at The UWI. In her spare time Mei-Gui is an avid hiker, trekking across numerous nature trails in Trinidad and Tobago.
Christine Bocus was diagnosed with a third heart blockage at the age of 14 and she received her first pacemaker in 2006. After five (5) years the battery life came to an end and she received her second pacemaker in 2011. Christine is also 24 years old and lives in Waterloo. She recently completed her undergraduate degree in Accounting and is currently working at RBC Royal Bank.
Since its inception in 2011, the Rotary Club of St Augustine’s Golf for Life has raised over $450,000.00 for HBITT. The 5th Annual Tournament takes place on 10th October at Millennium Golf and Country Club.
